Paix Park: Montreal's Urban Oasis

Paix Park, or Place de la Paix, is an urban square located on Saint-Laurent Boulevard in Montreal. Inaugurated in 1994, the park was envisioned as a place of peace, a commitment made by Mayor Jean Doré's administration after Montreal declared itself a Nuclear Free Zone in 1986. Designed by Robert Desjardins, the park features granite structures, grass, and trees.Paix Park has become a popular spot for skateboarders, with skateboarding being officially legalized in 2015. The park's design, featuring ledges and stairs, makes it an ideal location for skating. The park has been featured in many skateboarding videos and magazines.Beyond skateboarding, Paix Park serves as a gathering place and a venue for various events. Its central location makes it easily accessible to both locals and tourists. The park is surrounded by Montreal's vibrant neighborhoods, offering opportunities to explore local cuisine and shops. However, some visitors have expressed concerns about safety due to the presence of homeless individuals in the area.In 2001, local skateboarder David 'Boots' Bouthillier began filming activities in the park, which led to the creation of a documentary titled "Peace Park / Place de la Paix". The film explores the park's history, its diverse communities, and the challenges it faces.
