Discover more about Major's Hill Park

Nestled in the heart of downtown Ottawa, Major's Hill Park is a historic green space offering a serene retreat from the bustling city. Established in 1875, the park's origins trace back to 1826, coinciding with the construction of the Rideau Canal. Originally part of the property of Major Thomas McKay, the park was first known as Colonel's Hill, as it was the residence of Lieutenant-Colonel John By, the Superintending Engineer of the Rideau Canal, until 1832. Later, it became known as Major's Hill, named in honor of Major Daniel Bolton, who succeeded By. Today, commemorative plaques and a statue pay tribute to them and their successors. The original residence was destroyed by fire in 1848, but ruins remain. The park provides exceptional views of the Ottawa Locks on the Rideau Canal, the Ottawa River, and the Parliament Buildings. Visitors can explore the park's rolling lawns, winding pathways, and stately trees. Header House, the last remaining section of the Major's Hill Park greenhouse complex, now houses Tavern on the Hill, a seasonal outdoor canteen. Major's Hill Park is also a central venue for Ottawa's civic Canada Day celebrations and other events.
