Discover more about Beaver Creek Conservation Area

Beaver Creek Conservation Area, managed by the Meewasin Valley Authority, offers a captivating glimpse into the diverse ecosystems of the South Saskatchewan River Valley. Located a short drive south of Saskatoon, this semi-wilderness area protects a meeting point of prairie creek and river, showcasing a microcosm of the Meewasin Valley's natural beauty. For millennia, this land has been a gathering place for both humans and wildlife. Archaeological evidence suggests habitation dating back over 5,000 years, with the area serving as a traditional hunting ground for First Nations people. Later, European settlers like Charles Gillespie recognized the land's potential, though cultivating the sandy soil proved challenging. In 1913, Gillespie donated a portion of his land, laying the foundation for the conservation area we know today. Today, Beaver Creek boasts four distinct hiking trails that wind through a variety of habitats. The Aspen Grove Trail (Red Trail) delves into a vibrant micro-world within the forest, while the River View Trail (Green Trail) showcases wildflowers and the sounds of native bees. The Discovery Trail (Yellow Trail) offers breathtaking autumn colors, and the Orange Trail loops through grassland prairie along the South Saskatchewan River. Visitors can explore the Interpretive Centre, learn about the area's history and ecology, and even hand-feedBlack-capped Chickadees, a favorite activity for all ages. Beaver Creek is more than just a pretty place; it's a vital conservation area. It provides habitat for a variety of species, including grassland birds and species at risk. The area's namesake beavers play a crucial role in maintaining the ecosystem by creating ponds that support diverse plant and animal life.
