Discover more about The Distillery Historic District

The Distillery Historic District, located in downtown Toronto, is a unique blend of history and modern culture. This 13-acre village, once home to the Gooderham and Worts Distillery, boasts the largest and best-preserved collection of Victorian-era industrial architecture in North America. Designated a National Historic Site, the district features over 40 heritage buildings that now house art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and performance spaces. Founded in 1832 by English immigrants James Worts and William Gooderham, the distillery grew from a small windmill to a global powerhouse, producing millions of gallons of whisky. The Stone Distillery, built in 1859, stands as the oldest and largest heritage building in the district. While the original windmill was demolished, the remaining structures offer a glimpse into Toronto's industrial past. After the distillery closed in 1990, the area was transformed into a pedestrian-oriented arts and culture destination, officially opening in 2003. Today, visitors can explore the cobblestone streets, admire the Victorian architecture, and discover unique shops and galleries. The district hosts numerous events throughout the year, including the Toronto Christmas Market (Distillery Winter Village), summer markets, film screenings, and live music performances. With its blend of history, culture, and entertainment, the Distillery Historic District offers a captivating experience for locals and tourists alike.
