Discover more about The Totem Pole At St.Vital Park

The Totem Pole at St. Vital Park offers a surprising glimpse into First Nations artistry in an unexpected setting. St. Vital Park, a 46-hectare (114-acre) green space in south Winnipeg established in 1928, provides a diverse landscape of trails, gardens, and recreational areas along the Red River. The totem pole itself, an unusual sight in Manitoba, was donated by the Billinkof family in memory of their father. It once stood on the grounds of their family lumber business. Totem poles are monuments created by First Nations of the Pacific Northwest to represent and commemorate ancestry, histories, people, or events. Typically carved from red cedar, these poles display beings or crest animals that mark a family's lineage and validate their rights and privileges. St. Vital Park offers more than just a cultural curiosity. Visitors can explore the scenic road winding through treed areas, discover the Duck Pond (which transforms into a skating rink in winter), and enjoy Écobuage, a plaza featuring a unique fireplace sculpture. The park also includes a peace pole engraved with a message of peace in multiple languages, playgrounds, a volleyball field, and the internationally-awarded Manitoboggan toboggan slide.
