Zakouma National Park, straddling the Guéra and Salamat Regions in southeastern Chad, is a 3,000 km² testament to successful conservation. Established in 1963, it's Chad's oldest national park. For decades, Zakouma faced severe challenges, particularly rampant poaching that decimated its elephant population. By 2010, almost 90% of the park's elephants had been slaughtered for their ivory.In 2010, the Chadian government partnered with African Parks, a non-profit conservation organization, to manage and protect Zakouma. This collaboration brought about a dramatic turnaround. Implementing effective anti-poaching measures, community engagement strategies, and infrastructure development, African Parks transformed Zakouma into a secure and thriving ecosystem.Today, Zakouma is a sanctuary for a diverse array of wildlife. The elephant population, once on the brink of collapse, is steadily increasing. The park is also home to significant populations of Kordofan giraffes (50% of the world's population), lions, leopards, cheetahs, and various antelope species. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the over 370 recorded bird species, including the black-crowned crane.Visitors to Zakouma can experience guided game drives and walking safaris, immersing themselves in the park's stunning landscapes and diverse ecosystems. The best time to visit is during the dry season (November to April) when wildlife congregates around remaining water sources.
