Car
If you are driving from Antofagasta city center, take Avenida Angamos and head towards Route 5. Merge onto Route 5 (Pan-American Highway) heading north. Continue for approximately 70 kilometers until you reach the entrance of the Atacama Desert. Look for signs indicating the desert; the landscape will start to change dramatically as you approach.
Public Transportation
To visit the Atacama Desert using public transportation, start at the main bus terminal in Antofagasta. Purchase a ticket for a bus heading towards San Pedro de Atacama. Buses typically leave multiple times a day, and the journey takes about 5 to 6 hours. Once you arrive in San Pedro de Atacama, you'll find local tours that can take you into the desert.

For a more social experience, consider using a carpool app or local taxi services to find a shared ride heading towards the Atacama Desert. Meet your driver at a central location in Antofagasta, such as Plaza Colón. Confirm your destination and enjoy the ride, which will take you along Route 5 north to the desert entrance.
