Hi, I'm Eve. Here are a few practical things to know before exploring Volcán Miñiques.
Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you are traveling by car, start your journey in San Pedro de Atacama. Head south on Route 23, following signs for 'Laguna Miscanti'. After approximately 40 km (about 1 hour), you will reach the junction to the 'Salar de Atacama'. Continue on Route 23 for another 18 km until you reach the turnoff for Volcán Miñiques. Follow the dirt road leading to the viewpoint (this road can be rough, so a 4x4 vehicle is recommended). There is no entrance fee, but ensure you have enough fuel as services are limited in this remote area.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, begin at the main bus terminal in San Pedro de Atacama. Look for buses or shared taxis (colectivos) that are heading towards 'Laguna Miscanti'. These depart frequently, but it's best to confirm the schedule in advance. Once you reach the Laguna Miscanti area, you may need to hire a local driver or arrange a tour to take you to Volcán Miñiques, as public transport does not go directly to the volcano. Expect to pay around $10,000 to $15,000 CLP for the taxi service from the Laguna Miscanti area to the volcano.
Use Volcán Miñiques as your starting point for nearby food, family ideas, nightlife, and more local discoveries.
