Casa Carmona: A Neoclassical Gem in La Serena

Casa Carmona, located in the heart of La Serena, is a remarkable example of 19th-century neoclassical architecture. Constructed in 1855 by English master Thomas James, the house reflects the prosperity brought to the region by the silver mining boom. Arturo Cousiño commissioned the house, which later became known as Casa Carmona after Gregorio Carmona, a wealthy farmer, acquired it in 1890.The building's design incorporates elements of both colonial and European styles. The long facade features neoclassical ornaments, moldings, and a distinctive tower. The tower, with its square and octagonal drums, served as a lookout point, offering panoramic views of the city. Inside, the house is arranged around two interior patios, a design reminiscent of colonial-era homes.In 1968, Aurora Carmona de Woodward, a descendant of Gregorio Carmona, donated the house to the Salesian Priests. Today, Casa Carmona stands as a testament to La Serena's rich history and architectural heritage. Although the interior is not always open to the public, visitors can admire the building's exterior and imagine the lives of the families who once resided within its walls. Casa Carmona was declared a National Historical Monument on February 12, 1981.
