Altos de Lircay National Reserve: A Chilean Andean Paradise

Altos de Lircay National Reserve, located in the Maule region of Chile, is a captivating destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Created in 1996, this 121.63 km² reserve protects a diverse range of ecosystems in the Andean foothills. The reserve's landscape is characterized by native beech forests, clear rivers, and impressive mountains, including views of the Descabezado Grande and Cerro Azul volcanoes. The Lircay, Claro, and Blanquillo rivers flow through the area, adding to its scenic beauty. Altos de Lircay is a biodiversity hotspot, home to various plant and animal species. Seven of the ten Nothofagus (southern beech) species found in Chile can be observed here. The reserve also provides habitat for rare and endangered animals like the Tricahue parrot and Molina's hog-nosed skunk. Lucky visitors may spot Andean condors, Magellanic woodpeckers, eagles, and pumas. The reserve offers a range of activities, including hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and climbing. Several well-maintained trails cater to different skill levels, from short nature walks to multi-day treks. Popular trails include Laguna del Alto, El Enladrillado, and La Playa to Valle del Venado. El Enladrillado, a plateau of fractured volcanic rocks, is a particularly intriguing site with myths and legends surrounding its origin. The Piedra de los Platos, an archaeological site, showcases the customs of the area's ancient inhabitants. Visitor information is available at the CONAF Environmental Interpretation Center in Vilches Alto. Camping is permitted in designated areas, with mandatory registration and a small entry fee.
