Centro Cultural El Austral: A Glimpse into Valdivia's Heritage

The Centro Cultural El Austral, located in Valdivia, resides within the meticulously restored Thater Hoffmann house, a building with a rich history dating back to 1870. Originally built by Alberto Thater, a German immigrant who arrived in Valdivia in 1857, the house remained a family residence until 1980. In 1990, El Diario Austral acquired the property, undertaking a restoration project to transform it into a cultural center, which opened in November 1990.The center's first floor features a collection of 19th-century furniture and decorative objects, offering visitors a glimpse into the past. The second floor provides space for art workshops, including painting and music. The Centro Cultural El Austral offers a diverse program of events, including art exhibitions, photography displays, film screenings, and concerts. It also hosts the Salón Nacional del Arte de la Acuarela Ricardo Anwandter, a national watercolor art competition.
