Discover more about Ascensor Reina Victoria

The Ascensor Reina Victoria, a charming funicular in Valparaíso, has been ferrying locals and tourists alike since its inauguration on March 4, 1903. Crafted by Federico Page and Manuel Valenzuela, this 'elevator' is more than just a mode of transport; it's a historical monument, declared as such on September 1, 1998. Named in honor of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, who passed away in 1901, it stands as a testament to the city's rich history and cultural heritage. Rising at a steep 52-degree incline, the Ascensor Reina Victoria covers a vertical distance of 40 meters, ascending 35 meters to connect the lower station on Elias Street with Paseo Dimalow on Cerro Alegre. Despite being one of the shortest funicular routes in Valparaíso, its ascent offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city, the bustling port, and the vast Pacific Ocean. The upper station opens onto Lukas Square, a vibrant space adorned with colorful street art created by Unkolordistinto and Sammy Espinoza, adding to the area's bohemian charm. The Ascensor Reina Victoria has weathered its share of challenges, including structural damage from earthquakes in 1971 and 1985. After undergoing extensive renovations, it reopened in 1988 and continues to operate daily from 8 AM to 9 PM. A ride on this historic funicular offers not only a convenient way to navigate Valparaíso's hills but also an immersive experience into the city's unique atmosphere.
