History of Riomar

Northern Expansion Beyond the Old Centre

Riomar developed as Barranquilla expanded northwards beyond its historic central districts during the twentieth century. Formerly less intensively urbanised land was gradually absorbed by new residential areas, roads, schools, commercial premises and public services. Sectors such as El Golf and surrounding northern neighbourhoods became associated with larger plots, detached houses, tree-lined streets and a more spacious urban layout than the older centre. Later apartment construction altered the skyline, but the area’s basic identity remained tied to northern residential growth and its connection with the city’s main commercial corridors.

Residential Districts and Commercial Corridors

As Barranquilla’s population and economy grew, Riomar became an important location for higher-density housing, offices, private services and retail. The development of the Buenavista area strengthened the northern sector as a destination for shopping, dining and leisure, while major roads connected residential neighbourhoods with the wider metropolitan area. This process produced a mixed urban landscape rather than a single architectural style: established houses stand beside towers, malls and large institutional buildings. The locality’s social character has consequently been shaped as much by mobility and commerce as by its residential streets.

The Magdalena Becomes a Public Front

For much of Barranquilla’s history, the Magdalena River was primarily experienced through port, industrial and working-waterfront activity. In the twenty-first century, investment in the river edge around Riomar created a more public-facing landscape, most visibly through the Gran Malecón and associated cultural, event and food spaces. Puerta de Oro, the Pabellón de Cristal and Caimán del Río helped turn the northern riverfront into a setting for recreation and civic events. The change did not erase the working character of nearby Las Flores or the importance of the river to commerce; instead, it placed public leisure alongside older maritime uses.
