Discover more about Teatro Metropolitano de Medellín - José Gutierrez Gómez

The Teatro Metropolitano José Gutiérrez Gómez, often called Teatro Metropolitano de Medellín, stands as one of the city's most important cultural venues. Inaugurated in 1987, the theater has a rich history of hosting a diverse program of events, including concerts, operas, ballets, plays, and other performing arts. The theater is named in honor of José Gutiérrez Gómez, a civic leader who played a key role in its creation. The Teatro Metropolitano arose from a need for a larger, more acoustically advanced venue than the existing Teatro Pablo Tobón Uribe. Its construction was driven by Jaime Duque Mejía, who conveyed the idea to José María Acevedo, the manager of HACEB, who secured funding for the project. The theater's architecture, designed by Oscar Mesa, is noted for its understated yet solid and contemporary style, featuring an estimated 1.2 million bricks in its facade. The theater boasts a large stage of 916 square meters, equipped with advanced sound and lighting systems, and an orchestra pit. Acoustic ceilings made of concrete and wood act as sound reflectors, creating ideal conditions for various performances. The Teatro Metropolitano is home to the Philharmonic Orchestra of Medellín and the Estudio Polifónico de Medellín. Each year, the theater hosts events such as the Medellín Cultural International Classical Music Season, the Medellín International Opera and Zarzuela Season, and the International Jazz and World Music Festival.
