Discover more about Jardín Botánico de Medellín

The Jardín Botánico de Medellín, officially known as the Jardín Botánico Joaquín Antonio Uribe, offers a refreshing escape within Medellín's vibrant urban landscape. Spanning 14 hectares (approximately 34 acres), this botanical garden showcases a diverse collection of plant species, both native and exotic, creating a haven for relaxation and exploration. Originally, the area was known as Casa de Baños el Edén, a recreational bathhouse in the late 19th century when Medellín was a much smaller city. In the early 20th century, it was transformed into Bosque Centenario de la Independencia (Centennial of Independence Forest). The garden as it is known today was inaugurated on April 19, 1972, coinciding with the VII World Orchid Conference. The garden features several distinct areas, including a tropical forest, a palms garden with over 120 species, a lagoon, and a desert garden. One of its highlights is the Orquideorama, an open-air structure designed like a bouquet of flowers, housing a remarkable orchid collection and serving as an event space. The garden is also home to a butterfly farm and diverse fauna, including birds and iguanas. More than two million visitors explore the garden each year, enjoying its ecological trails and immersing themselves in nature. It serves as a center for culture, environmental education, and botanical research. Keep an eye out for events like the Feria de las Flores in August, which features a stunning orchid display, and the Feria de Libros y Cultura in September.
