Parque de Bolívar, known locally as Parque Bolívar, is an urban park that has been a central part of Medellín since its inauguration in 1892. Named in honor of Simón Bolívar, the liberator of several South American countries, the park serves as a meeting point and a space for cultural events for locals and tourists alike. The park covers approximately 14,400 square meters, featuring a blend of green spaces and paved areas adorned with native trees. The centerpiece is an equestrian statue of Simón Bolívar, erected in 1923, designed by Italian sculptor Giovanni Anderlini. The statue reflects Bolívar's legacy as a leader who championed independence for Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. Parque de Bolívar is surrounded by important cultural sites, including the Metropolitan Cathedral of Medellín to the north and the Lido Theater to the southeast. The park is also known for its regular events, such as the traditional Sunday open-air concerts by the Banda Sinfónica Universidad de Antioquia on the first three Sundays of each month and the San Alejo crafts market on the first Saturday of each month. These events, along with street theater and storytelling, contribute to the park's lively atmosphere. While the park offers a rich cultural experience, some visitors suggest caution due to safety concerns, especially at night.
