The Catedral Primada de Colombia, also known as the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Bogotá, is a significant religious and historical landmark. Situated on the Plaza de Bolívar in the heart of Bogotá's La Candelaria district, the cathedral has been the city's primary Catholic church since its founding. The present cathedral, the fourth iteration on this site, was designed by Friar Domingo de Petrés and constructed between 1807 and 1823, showcasing a neoclassical architectural style. The cathedral stands where the first mass in Bogotá was celebrated in 1538. Inside, visitors can explore fourteen chapels, including the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Chapel of Nuestra Señora del Topo, each adorned with unique religious art and historical significance. The cathedral also houses the remains of Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, the founder of Bogotá, and Antonio Nariño, a key figure in Colombia's independence movement. The Catedral Primada serves not only as a place of worship but also as a cultural center, hosting religious festivals, musical performances, and community events. Its historical importance, architectural value, and cultural significance led to its declaration as a National Monument in 1975.
