Discover more about Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira Botanical Garden

Nestled within the campus of the Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira, the Botanical Garden (Jardín Botánico UTP) offers a unique experience that goes beyond manicured flowerbeds. Established in the 1970s and officially recognized in 1983, the garden encompasses 12.7 hectares of land that has undergone natural succession, enriched by native flora. In 1999, a new phase of development began, leading to recognition from the Instituto de Investigación de Recursos Biológicos «Alexander von Humboldt» and integration into the Red Nacional de Jardines Botánicos de Colombia. Unlike conventional botanical gardens, the UTP Botanical Garden emphasizes the preservation of the area's natural vegetation. It acts as a sanctuary for a diverse range of plant and animal life, including 168 species of birds, some of which are migratory. Visitors can explore 1.5 km of trails that wind through wooded and wetland areas, offering opportunities to spot local wildlife such as the endemic Cauca poison frog. The trails feature concrete paths, stairs, viewpoints, and bridges. The garden also plays a crucial role in environmental education and conservation. It serves as a living laboratory for students and researchers and participates in projects focused on the conservation of threatened species in the Risaralda region.
