Parque Nacional Natural McBean Lagoon, located in the heart of the San Andrés and Providencia archipelago, is a stunning natural sanctuary. Declared a national park in 1995, it forms part of the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, protecting a vital portion of the world's third-largest coral reef. The park covers 9.95 square kilometers, with 9.05 square kilometers being maritime. The park features diverse ecosystems, including mangrove forests, coral formations, seagrass beds, and a small area of tropical dry forest. Iron Wood Hill, a small hill with steep slopes, and the flat alluvial plain where the McBean mangrove develops, characterize the landscape. The coral reef teems with colorful fish, sea turtles, and diverse bird species. The surrounding sea shimmers with a unique array of colors, known as “the sea of seven colors”. Visitors can hike the Iron Wood Hill trail, offering views of mangrove and dry forest ecosystems. Kayaking is popular in designated areas like Crab Cay, White Shoal, and Okay Point. The park is home to 74 species of birds, including the San Andres Vireo, and various marine species. The park is open year-round, with the dry season from January to June being an ideal time to visit.
