Walking
From the center of Aspen, head east on E Main St toward S Galena St for about 0.3 miles. You will reach the intersection with CO-82. Continue straight onto CO-82. After about 2 miles, you will see the signs for Independence Pass and the ghost town. Be sure to walk along the side of the road for safety.
Biking
Rent a bike from one of the local shops in Aspen. Start at the base of the Aspen Mountain and head east on E Main St. Continue on CO-82 for approximately 2 miles, following the bike lane. Take in the scenery as you ride; the path will be uphill for a portion. When you reach the area near Independence Pass, look for the trailhead signs directing you to the ghost town.
Hiking
If you are feeling adventurous, consider hiking. Begin at the Castle Creek Road trailhead, which you can reach by walking or taking a local shuttle from Aspen. Follow the Castle Creek Trail for about 4 miles. This trail will lead you towards Independence Pass, and you will see signs for the ghost town. The trail can be steep in places, so ensure you're prepared with proper hiking gear.
Public Transportation
Check the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA) bus schedule for a bus that travels from Aspen towards Independence Pass. Board the bus at the Aspen bus terminal and pay your fare. Inform the driver that you want to get off at the Independence Pass stop. From there, it’s a short walk to the ghost town site.
