Discover more about Royal Arch

The Royal Arch Trail, a classic Boulder hike, leads to a natural stone arch offering breathtaking views of Boulder and the Flatirons. This iconic landmark, formed by millions of years of erosion in the Fountain Formation, stands as a testament to the geological beauty of the region. The trail, while heavily trafficked, presents a moderately challenging climb with loose rocks, tight switchbacks, and large steps, making it a rewarding experience for outdoor enthusiasts. Located within Chautauqua Park, the Royal Arch has been a destination for adventurers since the 1880s. The first official trail was established in 1898, and in 1920, the City of Boulder recognized the value of this natural wonder and made it part of Boulder Mountain Park. The arch itself, standing approximately 20 feet high and spanning 30 feet wide, frames the sky, creating a majestic display. The hike to the Royal Arch begins at the Chautauqua Park Trailhead. From there, hikers follow the Bluebell Road Trail to the Bluebell Shelter, where the Royal Arch Trail begins. The trail then ascends through forests and over rocky terrain, offering glimpses of the Flatirons along the way. The final stretch involves a short scramble, leading to the awe-inspiring arch and its panoramic views. From the arch, you can see all the way to Denver on a clear day.
