Discover more about Royal Arch Trail Head

The Royal Arch Trail is a popular and challenging hike located near Boulder, Colorado, within the Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) system. The trail begins near the historic Chautauqua Park and ascends to the Royal Arch, a natural sandstone formation that frames stunning views of Boulder and the iconic Flatirons. The trail, established over a century ago, offers a classic Boulder hiking experience with its rocky terrain, tight switchbacks, and significant elevation gain. Originally, a photographer and hiking guide named “Rocky Mountain Joe” Sturtevant created the first trail up to the Royal Arch in 1898. Just over 20 years later, the city of Boulder purchased the land, and a group of Boy Scouts assisted E.M. Greenman, Eben G. Fine, and the Boulder Rotarians to build the first official trail. Starting from Chautauqua Park, hikers follow Bluebell Road to the Bluebell Shelter, where the Royal Arch Trail begins. The path winds through Bluebell Canyon before ascending steeply towards the arch. The trail's difficulty is rated as moderate to hard, with an elevation gain of over 1,400 feet. The 3.2-mile round trip typically takes 2-4 hours to complete. Loose rocks and large steps along the trail require sturdy footwear and careful footing. Despite the challenge, the panoramic views from the Royal Arch make the hike worthwhile. The arch itself provides a natural frame for photos of the city below and the surrounding landscape. Because the trail is heavily trafficked, especially on weekends, hikers are encouraged to start early to avoid crowds.
