Discover more about Starr Kempf's Kinetic Sculptures

Starr Kempf's Kinetic Sculptures presents a collection of dynamic, wind-driven art set against the backdrop of the Cheyenne Mountains in Colorado Springs. Created by the late Starr Kempf, these monumental steel sculptures are designed to interact with the wind, resulting in a mesmerizing display of motion and form. Kempf, who began sculpting in the 1950s, transitioned to these large-scale kinetic works in the late 1970s, crafting each piece over several years. Kempf's sculptures, often resembling birds or weather vanes, stand up to 50 feet tall and were initially displayed in his yard. The sculptures attracted considerable attention, drawing visitors and, at times, causing traffic congestion in the residential area. Due to neighborhood concerns, some sculptures were removed, but several remain on view at the original location. Other works have found homes at the Ent Center for the Arts at UCCS and in downtown Colorado Springs. Visiting Starr Kempf's Kinetic Sculptures offers a chance to witness art that combines engineering and aesthetics. The sculptures' movements, dictated by the wind, create an ever-changing spectacle. Though the display is viewed from the street, the artistry and scale of the works provide a memorable experience.
