Discover more about The Abbey

The Abbey, located in Cañon City, Colorado, is a historic landmark that has transformed over the years from a monastery and school to a premier event venue. Originally built in 1925 by Benedictine monks who arrived from Pennsylvania in the early 1920s, the Abbey served as the Abbey Boys' School, Holy Cross College and Seminary, and Camp Holy Cross. The architectural style, Collegiate Gothic with Jacobean Revival influences, is unique in south-central Colorado. Although original plans included a grand cathedral, electrical plant, and football stadium, the Great Depression and World War II curtailed these ambitions. The school drew students from across the United States and internationally. The monastic program began to dissolve in 2002, and the property was sold in 2007 to a private investment company. Today, The Abbey encompasses over 200 acres, with the front 50 acres occupied by buildings and the remaining land used for farming. It hosts numerous events throughout the year and offers guided tours on Saturdays from June through September. Visitors can explore the chapel, Abbot's quarters, bell tower, and more, or take a self-guided tour of the main floor. The Abbey stands as a testament to Cañon City's rich history and offers a unique space for gatherings.
