Lands End Observatory: Grand Mesa's Crowning Vista

Lands End Observatory, a historic ranger observatory completed in 1937, stands proudly on the rim of Colorado's Grand Mesa, offering visitors unparalleled panoramic views. At an elevation of 10,500 feet, the observatory provides sweeping vistas of the Gunnison and Grand River Valleys, the Uncompahgre Plateau, the San Juan Mountains, and the La Sal Mountains in Utah. The observatory's construction during the Great Depression was a collaborative effort between the U.S. Forest Service, the Works Progress Administration (WPA), and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The rustic architectural style, characterized by the use of natural materials like basalt stones and hand-sawn wood shingles, allows the building to blend harmoniously with its environment. The adjacent road, originally named Veteran's Road, was constructed by World War I veterans, providing them with employment during a time of economic hardship. While the observatory building is currently closed to the public, the viewing area remains open, offering ample space to soak in the scenery. Interpretive signs provide insights into the history of the area and the construction of the observatory. Sunset is an especially popular time to visit, as the views from the mesa's edge can be truly spectacular. From this vantage point, the dramatic drop-off of the Grand Mesa is particularly striking.
