Bancroft Park: Old Colorado City's Heart

Bancroft Park, situated in the heart of Old Colorado City, is a vibrant center of community life and historical significance. Originally the town square of Colorado City, founded in 1859, the park has evolved into a modern event space while retaining its historical charm. The park is located on the site of the former Bancroft School, which served as the main school for Colorado City School District 1 from 1888 until its demolition in 1926. The park underwent significant renovations in 2020, expanding the plaza, repairing the bandshell, and adding self-cleaning restrooms and a new playground. The bandshell, originally built in 1935 using Manitou greenstone, hosts numerous events, continuing a tradition of music in the area. The park's improvements were seen as a great addition to the Westside. Today, Bancroft Park hosts a variety of events, including live music performances, weekly summer farmers' markets, and the Summer Concert Series. The park also features natural climbing features and musical instrument-themed flowers in the playground, making it an attractive destination for families. Its central location in Old Colorado City means it's surrounded by shops, restaurants, and galleries, making it a perfect spot for people-watching and enjoying the local atmosphere. The park is also home to historical artifacts, including the Old Pioneer County Bank. Built in 1859, it later became the first county office building, and subsequently a Chinese laundry and antique shop. The park also features Dr. Garvin's cabin, a reminder of the town's colorful history.
