Discover more about First Flatiron

The First Flatiron is the northernmost and most easily accessible of the five numbered Flatirons, massive, slanted sandstone formations that define Boulder's skyline. These geological wonders, composed of 290-296 million-year-old conglomeratic sandstone, were tilted into their present orientation during the Laramide Orogeny, a mountain-building event that occurred between 80 and 35 million years ago. The hike to the saddle between the First Flatiron and Sunset Rock is a popular trek, offering panoramic views of Boulder and the surrounding plains. The trail, starting from Chautauqua Park, winds through meadows and up rocky switchbacks, with some light rock scrambling required near the top. The summit provides views of Longs Peak and the Indian Peaks Wilderness. While the hike is generally considered moderate to difficult, its proximity to downtown Boulder and the University of Colorado makes it a heavily trafficked trail. The Flatirons have been a symbol of Boulder for decades, with the third Flatiron once bearing the letters "CU" for the University of Colorado. Though the letters have since been painted over, the Flatirons remain an enduring emblem of the city.
