Discover more about Mount Sanitas Trailhead

Mount Sanitas Trailhead marks the start of a rewarding, albeit strenuous, climb to the summit of Mount Sanitas. The mountain, whose name is Latin for "health," was named after the sanitarium that lies at its base. The area has a history as a quarry in the early twentieth century. Today, the trails are known for their steep inclines, rocky terrain, and panoramic vistas. The most popular route is a 3.2-mile loop that combines the Mount Sanitas Trail, the East Ridge Trail, and the Sanitas Valley Trail. The initial ascent is challenging, with an elevation gain of over 1,300 feet. The terrain varies from open meadows to rugged boulders, requiring hikers to navigate rocky steps and uneven surfaces. The East Ridge Trail offers a steep descent with switchbacks and loose gravel. The Sanitas Valley Trail provides a gentler, more gradual descent back to the trailhead. Despite the demanding climb, the summit rewards hikers with breathtaking views of Boulder, the Flatirons, and the surrounding Front Range. The trail is heavily trafficked, especially on weekends, making it a social experience as well as a physical challenge.
