Staunton State Park: A Mountain Escape

Staunton State Park, a treasure in the ColoradoFront Range, welcomes visitors with its diverse terrain and rich history. The park's 3,828 acres range from grassy meadows at 8,100 feet to granite cliffs reaching over 10,000 feet, creating unique habitats for a wide array of plant and animal life. The land that makes up Staunton State Park has a rich human history. The first parcel was donated in 1986 by Frances Hornbrook Staunton, whose family homesteaded the land in the early 20th century. Over the years, additional parcels were added, including portions of the Davis Ranch and Elk Falls property. The park officially opened in 2013, offering a variety of recreational activities. Today, visitors can explore over 37 miles of trails suitable for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Rock climbers can test their skills on the granite cliffs, while anglers can cast a line in Davis Ponds or Elk Falls Pond. The park is also home to the stunning Elk Falls, which plunges nearly 300 feet. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including elk, mule deer, and various bird species.
