Kit Carson County Carousel: A Whimsical Journey Through Time

The Kit Carson County Carousel, nestled in the heart of Burlington, Colorado, is more than just a ride; it's a journey back to the gaslight era of American leisure. Built in 1905 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company for Denver's Elitch Gardens, this carousel, known as PTC #6, is a rare gem. It stands as the only surviving menagerie carousel from that company, boasting an assortment of animals beyond the traditional horses. In 1928, Kit Carson County Commissioners purchased the carousel for $1,200, a controversial decision that led to their dismissal. The carousel found its home at the county fairgrounds, housed in a distinctive 12-sided building. The carousel features 46 hand-carved and painted animals, including horses, giraffes, camels, and even a hippocampus. The saddle trappings on the animals are reminiscent of those used on cavalry mounts in the 18th century. The carousel also features four chariots with original landscape paintings on the back. The carousel also features 45 original oil paintings depicting cosmopolitan scenes. Adding to the experience is the 1909 Wurlitzer Monster Military Band Organ, containing 255 pipes, drums, and a cymbal. The carousel underwent a 25-year restoration, completed in 2001, ensuring its original splendor was preserved. A museum on the fairgrounds showcases the carousel's history and restoration. A few animals were stolen in 1981 but were recovered, and paraded through town upon their return. The Kit Carson County Carousel is a National Historic Landmark and a testament to community pride. It operates from Memorial Day to Labor Day, offering rides for a small fee.
