Mesa Verde National Park, established in 1906, protects the archaeological heritage of the Ancestral Pueblo people who inhabited the area from 600 to 1300 CE. The park, located in southwestern Colorado, encompasses over 5,000 archaeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. These well-preserved sites offer a glimpse into the lives of a thriving community that built elaborate stone structures in the sheltered alcoves of canyon walls. For over six centuries, the Ancestral Puebloans primarily lived on the mesa tops, farming and developing their culture. Around the late 1190s, they began constructing villages beneath the overhanging cliffs, creating the iconic cliff dwellings that Mesa Verde is known for. These dwellings ranged from single-room storage units to villages with over 150 rooms. However, by the late 1200s, the Ancestral Puebloans migrated south into present-day New Mexico and Arizona.Today, visitors can explore several of these remarkable sites, including Cliff Palace, Balcony House, and Long House, on ranger-guided tours. The park also offers self-guided tours of Step House and other mesa-top sites. The Chapin Mesa Archaeological Museum provides further insights into Ancestral Puebloan life and culture. Mesa Verde is not only a historical treasure but also a place of rugged beauty, with scenic drives and overlooks offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
