Car
If you are traveling by car, start by heading east on CO-82 from Aspen. The Independence Ghost Town is located approximately 16 miles away from Aspen on CO-82. Keep an eye out for roadside signs indicating the ghost town, as there are multiple scenic pull-offs along the way. After about 16 miles, look for a parking area on the right side of the road that leads to the ghost town. Parking is free, but be sure to arrive early during peak tourist seasons to secure a spot.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take the Roaring Fork Transit Authority (RFTA) bus from Aspen to Independence Pass. The bus operates during the summer months and offers stunning views along the way. Check the RFTA schedule for exact times. Once you arrive at the Independence Pass stop, you will need to walk approximately 1 mile on a well-marked trail to reach the ghost town. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for a moderate hike.
Hiking
If you're feeling adventurous and are already in the vicinity of Independence Pass, consider hiking from the surrounding trails. There are several hiking trails that lead to the area, with varying levels of difficulty. Make sure to bring plenty of water, snacks, and a map of the trails.
