Discover more about Royal Arch Trail Head

Embark on a classic Boulder hiking experience via the Royal Arch Trail, a popular route accessed through the historic Chautauqua Park. This well-traveled trail ascends the side of Green Mountain, rewarding hikers with breathtaking views and a unique geological formation. Established in 1898, the trail's origins are linked to "Rocky Mountain Joe" Sturtevant, a photographer and hiking guide who first charted a path to the arch. The City of Boulder acquired the land just over two decades later, and with the help of the Boy Scouts and the Boulder Rotarians, the first official trail was constructed. The hike is considered moderately difficult, featuring a steep incline, loose rocks, and large steps. The 3.2-mile round trip involves an elevation gain of over 1,400 feet, providing a solid workout. As you ascend, you'll be treated to ever-improving views of the city of Boulder and the majestic Flatirons. The trail winds through varied terrain, including rocky stretches and dense forest. The Royal Arch itself is a massive sandstone formation that frames the city below, offering a picture-perfect spot to rest and soak in the scenery. The trail can be confusing in places, so carrying a map and extra water is recommended. The trailhead is accessible via Bluebell Road from the Chautauqua Trailhead. Chautauqua Park, the gateway to the Royal Arch Trail, is a historic landmark in itself, dating back to 1898 when the City of Boulder purchased land to establish a cultural retreat. Today, Chautauqua Park offers a range of amenities, including a dining hall, playground, and access to other trails.
