Ron Stewart Preserve at Rabbit Mountain: Where History Meets Nature

Ron Stewart Preserve at Rabbit Mountain Open Space, located near Longmont, Colorado, offers a serene escape into captivating landscapes. This 1,500-acre preserve is known for its stunning views of the Front Range and diverse ecological habitats. Visitors can explore rolling meadows and rugged cliffs while enjoying the area's rich human history, geological features, and abundance of plants and wildlife.The preserve features three well-maintained trails: the easy 2.2-mile Indian Mesa Trail, the moderate 1.5-mile Little Thompson Overlook Trail, and the moderate 2.5-mile Eagle Wind Trail. These trails offer panoramic views and are suitable for various skill levels. The Little Thompson Overlook Trail provides views of Longs Peak and the Little Thompson River. The Eagle Wind Trail passes through Ponderosa Pine forest and leads to seasonal nesting grounds for golden eagles.Rabbit Mountain has a rich history, serving as a winter site for the Arapaho Native Americans and later attracting homesteaders in the 19th century. Archaeological sites, including Native American artifacts and campsite rings, have been discovered in the area. In 1984, Jack Moomaw's granddaughter sold Rabbit Mountain to Boulder County, ensuring its preservation. In 2016, the area was renamed the Ron Stewart Preserve at Rabbit Mountain to honor Ron Stewart, the retiring Boulder Parks and Open Space Director.Visitors can enjoy hiking, biking, and picnicking while observing wildlife such as deer, coyotes, raptors, and songbirds. The area's unique habitat, with dry scrubby vegetation, makes it ideal for spotting various bird species. The preserve is open daily from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm, with a parking lot available.
