Getting There

  • Walking

    From downtown Grand Junction, head east on Main Street towards the Colorado River. Follow the Riverfront Trail, which will lead you directly to Las Colonias Park. The River Park is located within Las Colonias Park. The walk is approximately 1 mile and should take about 20 minutes. There is no cost for walking.

  • Driving

    From I-70, take the Horizon Drive exit and head south. Turn left onto US-6 W/Clifton Rd, then turn right onto 27 1/2 Rd. Continue onto Dike Rd, then turn left onto River Rd. Las Colonias Park will be on your right. Parking is available in the lots adjacent to the park, with a parking fee of $15. Free parking options may be available within a short walk.

River Park at Las Colonias is a highlight of the 130-acre Las Colonias Park in Grand Junction, Colorado. Situated on the banks of the Colorado River, the park offers a variety of water-based activities and recreational opportunities. The River Park features a lengthy, accessible water channel, two standing wave water features, and inviting beach and wading areas. These amenities cater to a wide range of ages, abilities, and experience levels, making it an inclusive destination for families and individuals alike. Visitors can enjoy paddleboarding, kayaking, and simply relaxing by the water. Note that swimming and tubing are not allowed in the ponds. Las Colonias Park has a rich and diverse history. The area was once used for sugar beet processing and migrant farm housing in the 1920s and 30s, and later as a uranium mill in the 1950s and 60s. After a significant cleanup effort by the Department of Energy, the land was given to the city in 1997 for public use. The park is considered the last 'pearl' in the 'string of pearls' vision, which has developed approximately 21 miles of riverfront trail and park system along the Colorado River. The park also includes amenities such as restrooms, shelters, and concessions, ensuring a comfortable experience for visitors. The Riverfront Trail extends through the area, connecting Fruita to Palisade.
