Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start from the center of High Plains. Head west on Main St toward US-385 N. Merge onto US-385 N and continue for about 12 miles until you reach the intersection with CO-140. Turn left onto CO-140 W and continue for approximately 20 miles. You will see signs for Mesa Verde National Park. Once you enter the park, follow the park road to the Balcony House parking area. Please note that there is an entrance fee to the park, which is approximately $30 per vehicle.

• Public Transportation

  If you are using public transportation, you will first need to take a bus from High Plains to the nearest major town with more transportation options, such as Cortez. From Cortez, you can catch a shuttle service or taxi to Mesa Verde National Park. Be sure to check the shuttle schedules in advance as they may vary. Once you arrive at the park entrance, you can walk or take a park shuttle to the Balcony House area. Remember that there are entrance fees to the park, and you should also budget for the cost of the shuttle or taxi.

• Bicycle

  For the more adventurous, biking from High Plains to Mesa Verde National Park is an option, though it requires preparation. Start on US-385 N, and be sure to wear a helmet and bring plenty of water. The ride is about 32 miles and will take approximately 2-3 hours depending on your speed and stops. Once inside the park, you can bike to the Balcony House, but be aware that some roads may be steep and require a good level of fitness. Entrance fees still apply once you enter the park.

• Walking/Hiking

  Should you find yourself in the vicinity of Mesa Verde National Park and prefer an outdoor experience, walking or hiking can be a scenic way to reach Balcony House. However, this method is only recommended for those staying near the park. You can begin from the park entrance and follow the designated trails. Ensure you are prepared with adequate supplies for a hike, including water, snacks, and a map of the trails. The park’s entrance fee applies here as well.
