Pitkin County Library: Aspen's Information Hub

The Pitkin County Library, located in the heart of Aspen, Colorado, has evolved from a humble beginning in 1938 to a modern, multifaceted community resource. Originally housed in a corner of the Wheeler Opera House, the library has moved and expanded over the years to meet the growing needs of Pitkin County residents and visitors. The library offers a wide array of services, including access to books, e-books, and multimedia resources. It also provides public computers, Wi-Fi, and printing services. The library hosts various programs and events for children, teens, and adults, such as storytimes, book clubs, workshops, and film screenings. The LAB, a dedicated makerspace, provides equipment for craft projects, film editing, music production, and digital art creation. The current library building, designed in the Prairie School style by Caudill, Gustafson, Ross and Associates, opened in 1991. In 2016, Snowdon & Hopkins Architects completed a remodel and addition, enhancing the library's functionality and aesthetic appeal. The building shares a plaza with the Justice Center and is located across from the Hotel Jerome, making it a central landmark in Aspen. The Pitkin County Library is a member of the Marmot Library Network, granting cardholders access to over 1.3 million volumes throughout Western Colorado. The library's commitment to providing free and accessible resources has made it an indispensable asset to the Aspen community.
