Discover more about Temple Israel Museum

The Temple Israel Museum, located in Leadville, Colorado, offers a captivating look into the lives of Jewish pioneers in the American West. Housed in a beautifully restored synagogue built in 1884, the museum stands as a testament to the Jewish community's contributions to Leadville's vibrant history. At an elevation of over 10,000 feet, it may be the highest elevation synagogue building in the United States. When silver was discovered in Leadville, the town boomed, attracting nearly 30,000 people, including about 300 Jewish individuals. These Jewish immigrants, primarily of German origin, played vital roles as merchants, tailors, and clerks, contributing significantly to the town's economy and community. Among them was David May, who established a dry goods store that later evolved into The May Department Stores Company. The Temple Israel served as the center of Jewish life in Leadville until around 1912. Over time, as the mining industry declined, so did the Jewish population, and the synagogue fell into disrepair. In 1992, the Temple Israel Foundation acquired the building and began its restoration. Following a fire in 2006, the synagogue was meticulously restored to its original splendor and reopened as a museum. Today, the Temple Israel Museum displays a collection of artifacts that tell the stories of Leadville's Jewish community. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring Jewish cowboys, gunfighters, mayors, and businessmen who shaped the towns of the Old West. The museum also serves as a research center, offering access to historical documents, photographs, and biographies of pioneering Jewish families.
