Discover more about Healy House Museum & Dexter Cabin

The Healy House Museum & Dexter Cabin offers a captivating glimpse into Leadville's silver mining past. Located at 912 Harrison Avenue, this site features two distinct homes: the elegant Healy House and the rustic Dexter Cabin. The Healy House, a large, white clapboard Greek Revival residence, was built in 1878 for August Meyer, a mining engineer, and his bride, Emma. The house signaled the arrival of domestic comforts to the rough mining camp. The rooms showcase lavish Victorian furnishings collected by Leadville pioneers. Visitors can stroll through the gardens, restored in Emma Meyer's honor, with Victorian urns, statuary, and a gazebo offering magnificent views of Leadville and the surrounding mountains. Beside the Healy House stands the Dexter Cabin, a surprisingly plush 1879 log cabin that was the Leadville residence of James V. Dexter, a mining investor and one of Colorado's first millionaires. Despite its rustic exterior, the cabin boasts fine woodwork, hardwood floors, and a collection of expensive items. Dexter used the cabin to host stag parties and a high-stakes poker club. Together, the Healy House and Dexter Cabin provide an engaging experience for history buffs and casual tourists alike. The museum hosts events throughout the year, including educational programs and seasonal activities.
