The Wheeler Opera House, situated at 320 E Hyman Ave in Aspen, Colorado, has been a vibrant center for arts and culture since its construction in 1889. Commissioned by Jerome B. Wheeler, a prominent businessman and mining investor, the opera house reflected Aspen's prosperity during the silver boom. Designed by architect W.J. Edbrooke, who also designed the Tabor Grand Opera House in Denver, the Wheeler was the tallest building in Aspen at the time, constructed with local peachblow sandstone. Opening night on April 23, 1889, was a grand affair, with satin programs scented with rose water and the building illuminated by some of the region's first electric lights. The Conreid Opera Company performed "The King's Fool," followed by a swordplay exhibition. The Aspen Daily Times lauded the opera house as a grand structure. The building originally housed Wheeler's bank, along with other businesses, on the lower floors, while the theater occupied the upper floors. The interior boasted ornate details, including Moroccan leather seats, an azure ceiling with silver stars, and a central chandelier. Over the years, the Wheeler Opera House has faced numerous challenges, including financial struggles, a devastating fire in 1912, and periods of closure. After falling into disrepair, the City of Aspen purchased the building in 1918. A series of renovations, including a redesign by Bauhaus architect Herbert Bayer around 1950, have restored the opera house to its former Victorian glory. The most significant renovation was completed in 1984, returning the building to its original splendor. Today, the Wheeler Opera House is a beautifully preserved venue that hosts a diverse range of events, including concerts, film screenings, community events, and educational programs. With a seating capacity of approximately 500, the theater offers a mix of contemporary and historical design elements.
