Discover more about Chimney Rock National Monument

Chimney Rock National Monument, located in southwestern Colorado's San Juan National Forest, encompasses 4,726 acres of archaeological, cultural, geological, and biological significance. The monument protects over 100 significant Pueblo Indian archaeological sites, offering visitors a unique window into the lives of the Ancestral Puebloans who resided here between A.D. 925 and 1125. The dramatic twin rock spires, Chimney Rock and Companion Rock, frame the landscape and hold astronomical significance, particularly concerning the lunar standstill. The Ancestral Puebloans who occupied Chimney Rock were part of the Chacoan culture, a complex system of communities centered in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico. Chimney Rock is considered a Chacoan cultural outlier, and the architectural structures found here, including pit houses, great kivas, and great houses, reflect this connection. The Great House Pueblo, located on the mesa top, is believed to have served as an observatory, aligning with astronomical events such as the summer solstice and the lunar standstill. Visitors to Chimney Rock National Monument can explore the ancient ruins through self-guided tours. The Mesa Village Trail, a paved loop, offers a glimpse into the daily lives of the Puebloans, featuring an excavated Great Kiva and pit house. For a more challenging hike, the Great House Pueblo Trail leads to the top of the mesa, providing 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape and the ruins of the Great House. The monument is open from mid-May to the end of September, and an activity pass is required for entry.
