The town of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, boasts a unique claim to fame: it's the location of the world's deepest geothermal hot spring, known as the 'Mother Spring'. Officially recognized by Guinness World Records, the spring's measured depth extends to at least 1,002 feet, a record set in 2011. However, the actual depth remains a mystery, as the measuring line didn't reach the bottom. The Mother Spring is the source of the town's geothermal activity, providing naturally heated, mineral-rich waters. The water, emerging from approximately 6,000 feet below the surface, is heated by volcanic activity and maintains a temperature between 110°F (43°C) and 144°F (62°C). It contains minerals such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, silica, iron, manganese, and sulfate, believed to provide health benefits. For centuries, people have flocked to Pagosa Springs to experience the healing powers of these waters. The Ute tribe, native to the area, named the springs 'Pag-Osah,' meaning 'healing waters'. Today, visitors can enjoy the therapeutic waters at several locations, including The Springs Resort, Overlook Hot Springs, and Healing Waters Resort & Spa.
