The park's namesake, Pulpit Rock, is a unique geological formation dating back approximately 66 million years to the Dawson Arkose Formation. This formation consists of sandstone and mudstone sediments created during the rise of the Rocky Mountains. The exposed white-grey face of Pulpit Rock stands as a testament to this ancient geological history.
Archaeological evidence suggests human presence in the Austin Bluffs area dating back 10,000 years, with Native American artifacts and stone tools discovered in the vicinity. Stone enclosures surrounding Pulpit Rock are believed to have been used in Ute vision quests.
Today, Pulpit Rock Park offers a variety of activities, including hiking, running, and mountain biking. Several trails wind through the park, with the most popular leading to the summit of Pulpit Rock. The climb to the top can be steep and rugged, involving some scrambling over rocks. However, the reward is a breathtaking panoramic view of Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak, and the surrounding Front Range.
