Discover more about Red Rock Canyon Open Space

Red Rock Canyon Open Space is a captivating blend of natural beauty and historical significance. The park's stunning red rock formations are part of the Fountain Formation, composed of ancient granite and gneiss, remnants of the Ancestral Rocky Mountains. These formations, sculpted by erosion, create a series of parallel ridges and canyons that offer breathtaking views of Pikes Peak and the Front Range. Evidence suggests that the area was inhabited as early as 7000 B.C. by indigenous tribes such as the Jicarilla Apache and the Utes, drawn to the area by Fountain Creek and abundant wildlife. In the late 1800s, the canyon became a source of building materials, with quarries extracting gypsum, building sand, and sandstone blocks. The Kenmuir Quarry, a major operation, supplied materials for Old Colorado City and surrounding communities. The Colorado-Philadelphia Company Mill refined ore shipped from Cripple Creek gold mines, becoming the largest of its kind before closing in the early 1900s. After periods of industrial use and failed development plans, the City of Colorado Springs purchased the property in 2003, transforming it into a public open space. Today, Red Rock Canyon Open Space features over 10 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, as well as specialized areas like off-leash dog loops and a free-ride bike park. Rock climbing is also popular, with established routes available, though registration is required at the Garden of the Gods Visitor Center. The park's trails connect to other long-distance trails, such as the Intemann Trail and Section 16, offering even more opportunities for exploration.
