Discover more about Salida Museum

The Salida Museum offers a glimpse into the vibrant past of Salida and the surrounding area, known as the 'Heart of the Rockies'. Founded in 1954 by Harriet Alexander, Salida's first councilwoman, the museum began in a small room at the Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center. By 1966, the collection had outgrown its original space, leading to the construction of the current building, which opened in 1976. The museum's exhibits encompass a wide range of artifacts related to Salida's history, starting around 1880 when the town was founded as a major railroad center. Visitors can explore displays featuring items from the area's early settlers, including explorers, miners, and ranchers. The museum also highlights the crucial role of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad in Salida's development and its connection to the mining industry. In addition to its permanent exhibits, the Salida Museum also features rotating displays that delve into specific aspects of local history. The museum also owns and maintains the Maysville School and the Smelter Smokestack as historical landmarks. The Salida Museum Association is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization.
