Kroger Via Ferrata: Telluride's Cliffside Adventure

Experience Telluride's Kroger Via Ferrata: A thrilling blend of hiking and climbing with breathtaking views on this unique 'iron road' adventure.

4.7

The Kroger Via Ferrata, affectionately called the "Krogerata" by locals, offers a unique blend of hiking and climbing along the dramatic cliffs of Telluride's box canyon. Conceived by Chuck Kroger, a renowned climber and Telluride local, the via ferrata provides a thrilling traverse with stunning views of Bridal Veil Falls and the surrounding San Juan Mountains. Kroger, inspired by the 'iron roads' of the Italian Dolomites, began building the via ferrata in 2006. His vision was to create an accessible yet challenging route that combined technical mountaineering elements with the beauty of the natural landscape. After Kroger's death in 2007, friends and community members completed the project, ensuring its legacy as a tribute to his vision. The route involves traversing cliff faces using metal rungs and cables, requiring participants to clip into the safety system. While not overly technical, the via ferrata demands a good level of fitness and comfort with heights. Some sections involve narrow ledges and exposed positions, creating an adrenaline-pumping experience. Although it is free to use, it is highly recommended that you hire a guide. Telluride's Via Ferrata is more than just a climb; it's an opportunity to connect with nature, challenge your limits, and appreciate the vision of Chuck Kroger. Maintained by the Telluride Mountain Club, the 'Krogerata' remains a popular and challenging adventure for locals and tourists alike.
