Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving from the center of Telluride, start on Colorado Ave and head southeast. Continue straight for about 0.5 miles until you reach the junction with Highway 145. Turn right onto Highway 145 and follow it for approximately 5 miles until you reach the turnoff for Black Bear Pass. This road may be unpaved and is suited for high-clearance vehicles. Continue up the road, which will lead you to the Kroger Via Ferrata trailhead located at Black Bear Pass Summit. Parking is limited, so arrive early to secure a spot. Note that this area may require a parking fee, typically around $10.

• Public Transportation

  Public transportation options are limited directly to the Kroger Via Ferrata area. However, you can take the Galloping Goose bus service, which operates in Telluride. Board the bus at any designated stop in Telluride and ride to the last stop at the end of the line, which is near the entrance to the Black Bear Pass area. From there, it is approximately a 1.5-mile hike to the Kroger Via Ferrata trailhead. Ensure to check the bus schedule for times as they may vary throughout the day.

• Hiking

  If you've parked at the Black Bear Pass Summit, you will need to hike approximately 1 mile to reach the Kroger Via Ferrata entrance. The trail will climb steadily, and you may encounter rocky sections. Make sure to wear sturdy hiking boots and carry plenty of water. The hike may take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes depending on your pace. Keep an eye out for trail markers to ensure you stay on the path.
