Discover more about Telluride Free Box

The Telluride Free Box is a beloved community institution that exemplifies the town's unique character and commitment to sustainability. Functioning as a free exchange hub, it allows residents and visitors to donate and acquire gently used items, fostering a culture of sharing and reducing waste. Founded in 1975, the Free Box began as a simple box outside the Lost Branch Health Food Store, where a resident left clothing for others to take. Over time, it evolved into a structured collection of shelves and cubbies, becoming a central part of Telluride's identity. The Free Box has faced challenges, including attempts by the town to remove it in the 1980s, but community members rallied to preserve it, solidifying its place in local history. Relocated on November 4, 2024, to 151 S. Willow Street, the Free Box now resides on town-owned property, ensuring its maintenance and longevity. The new location features a covered structure, improved organization, and dedicated spaces for books, shoes, and sporting goods. The Free Box operates on an honor system, encouraging responsible donations and promoting a sense of community. It serves as a reminder of Telluride's values and its dedication to reducing waste through reuse and sharing.
