The Free Box has faced challenges, including attempts by the town to remove it in the 1980s, but community members rallied to preserve it, solidifying its place in local history.Relocated on November 4, 2024, to 151 S. Willow Street, the Free Box now resides on town-owned property, ensuring its maintenance and longevity. The new location features a covered structure, improved organization, and dedicated spaces for books, shoes, and sporting goods. The Free Box operates on an honor system, encouraging responsible donations and promoting a sense of community. It serves as a reminder of Telluride's values and its dedication to reducing waste through reuse and sharing.
