Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Driving
The Holy Cross Wilderness is accessible from several towns, including Vail, Minturn, and Leadville. From Vail, take Highway 24 south towards Leadville. Depending on your chosen trailhead, follow signs for Tigiwon Road or Homestake Road, both of which are Forest Service roads leading into the wilderness area. Be prepared for driving on unpaved, potentially rough roads. Parking is available at most trailheads, but can be limited during peak season. There are no fees to enter the Holy Cross Wilderness, but a free, self-issued permit is required for overnight camping. Note: Tigiwon Road is typically closed during winter months due to snow.
Public Transport
While public transportation directly to the trailheads is limited, you can take a bus to Vail or Minturn. From there, you may be able to hire a taxi or rideshare service to reach the trailhead, but availability can be unreliable, especially for the final stretch on Forest Service roads. Consider contacting local transportation providers in advance to arrange a ride. Cost: Bus fares to Vail or Minturn vary depending on the origin. Taxi or rideshare fares from Vail or Minturn to a trailhead can range from $50-$100 or more, depending on distance and availability.
