Getting There

Taxi

From Moroni, hire a taxi to Mvouni village, the most common starting point for hikes to Mount Karthala. Negotiate the fare beforehand, as prices are not fixed. A one-way trip should cost approximately 1500-2500 KMF. From Mvouni, you'll need to arrange for a local guide to lead you to the summit.
Public Transport

From the main bus station in Moroni, take a taxi-brousse (shared minibus) towards Mutsamudu. The journey takes about 30-45 minutes. From Mutsamudu, you may need to take a local taxi or ask locals for directions to the Mount Karthala trailhead, as public transport does not go directly there. Confirm with the taxi driver that they understand your destination. The taxi-brousse fare is approximately 500 KMF.

Mount Karthala, or Karthola, is a majestic and active shield volcano that forms the heart of Grande Comore, the largest island in the Comoros archipelago. Rising to 2,361 meters (7,746 feet), it is the highest point in the nation and a dominant feature of the island's landscape. Its broad, gentle slopes are covered in moist evergreen forests up to 1,800 meters, giving way to stunted trees and heathland at higher elevations. Karthala is one of the world's most active volcanoes, with over 20 recorded eruptions since the 19th century.
