Grand Comore, known locally as Ngazidja, has a rich history that dates back to the early centuries AD. The island was initially settled by Bantu-speaking people from the African mainland. Archaeological evidence suggests these early inhabitants engaged in agriculture, fishing, and trade with neighboring islands and coastal regions.

By the 9th century, Arab and Persian traders began to arrive on Grand Comore, bringing with them Islam, which has since become the dominant religion on the island. These traders established small coastal settlements and introduced new agricultural practices, as well as the Swahili language, which is still spoken today.

Between the 12th and 15th centuries, Grand Comore came under the influence of Shirazi settlers from Persia. The Shirazi established the Sultanate of Bambao in the northern part of the island, which became a center for trade and culture. The Shirazi era is noted for the construction of numerous mosques and the establishment of a thriving trade network that extended to the East African coast and beyond.

The arrival of Portuguese explorers in the early 16th century marked the beginning of European interest in the Comoros. However, it was not until the 19th century that the French established a colonial presence on the island. In 1841, France officially annexed Mayotte, another island in the Comoros archipelago, and gradually extended its control over Grand Comore. By 1912, Grand Comore was fully integrated into the French colonial empire.
